Scott Smith
MHC-LP
Born in Alaska, Scott has taken a circuitous route geographically and professionally. As a child he had to give up ski racing to move to Texas. After college in Washington D.C., Scott worked and studied in Houston, Anchorage, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Austin before settling on NYC for its unparalleled diversity of people, cultures, architecture, arts, and history.
Starting off professionally in Oil & Gas, he worked for the world’s largest companies on everything from underground mines in Alaska to fisheries in Washington to skyscrapers in Los Angeles. His own challenges and transformative journey inspired him to pivot to pursue mental health. Scott understands firsthand how much more fulfilling and gratifying life becomes when we find our unique authenticity and passions.
In his free time, Scott plays soccer and volleyball recreationally, and practices yoga, meditation, and breathwork for self-care. Scott also loves to read, travel, and experience New York’s unique and quirky offerings.
Approach & Values
Scott believes you do not need to be suffering to benefit from counseling. Improving oneself is a sign of strength not weakness especially for men who are socialized to be self-sufficient, stoic and strong. Scott works with men to evolve and redefine a more nuanced and sophisticated version of masculinity.
Specializing in trauma-focused and positive psychology, he integrates various modalities including CBT, DBT, REBT, Existentialism, and Psychodynamic. Scott helps clients identify and overcome, often unconscious, barriers that are holding them back from a joyful and meaningful life.
